About Marietta, Lancaster County PA!
Marietta in colonial days was known as Anderson’s ferry. It dates to 1719. It sits along the Susquehanna River, west of Lancaster City. In 1830 serious traffic began on the Pennsylvania Canal, and in 1850 the arrival of the Pennsylvania Railroad heralded an era of prosperity for the flourishing river village, which became an iron smelting and lumbering town. In 1882, Wyeth Laboratories had its birth in Marietta. River-centered industries dwindled in the twentieth century. Eighteenth century wealth had financed many elaborate mansions which made Marietta especially attractive to restorers. Forty-five percent of Marietta was declared a historic district. Hurricane Agnes in1972 meant federal disaster relief funds. Marietta has a wealth of unusual shops, bed and breakfasts, a Music Box Museum, and of course, the Susquehanna River.
