For a longtime Philadelphia native, Capt. Gus’s comes as a genuine surprise! I had driven by the Orange Street location many times, but it was not until I read the newspaper article about the renovations that I became curious. Cheese steaks have always been a favorite of mine, and I always measure those I find in Lancaster County against the ones I was used to “back home”. Now I know--- Capt. Gus’s cheese steaks are far superior to any you can get in Philadelphia’s famous cheese steak neighborhood!
From the crisp roll to the succulent steak itself, these sandwiches are a real treat. The steak is cooked just right. So many times the meat in a cheese steak sandwich seems over done and dried out. Not a Capt. Gus’s! The cheese is not gooey, but gives an added flavor and texture that leaves little to be desired. Add onions and mushrooms, and you have a full-bodied gourmet experience. I have always rated restaurants by the quality of the French fries. Too often fries are heated over and over until they are virtually tasteless. The French fries here are served crisp and hot, and taste just like the ones Mom used to make.
The seashore ambience is clean, bright and inviting. It is obvious that the diners are enjoying their meals. Service by a family member couldn’t be better, and our waitress checked back with us frequently. Prices are very reasonable. Next time you’re hungry for the best, stop in at Capt. Gus’s Steak Shop!
